7 Power Points

  1. Lead with clarity, integrity and confidence.
  2. Emotional intelligence is the ability to restrain negative feelings such as anger and self-doubt, and instead focus on positive ones such as confidence, optimism and resiliency. Leaders act with emotional intelligence to improve team performance.
  3. Only the strong survive. Resistance, jealousy and criticism come with the territory. Become comfortable with your power without abusing it.
  4. Use those slow periods to re-organize, clear up clutter and re-think your game plan for higher sales, visibility and production.
  5. Becoming a workaholic is hazardous to your physical and mental health. Enjoy the comfort of taking off your business “hat” by developing friendships outside of your business network.
  6. Remember your vital contacts, vendors and customers during the holidays. Sending sentiments of gratitude and well wishes is good business.
  7. Begin to think and act on new fresh ideas to promote and expand your business for the new year. What will you do differently to create a stronger brand for yourself?

Choosing Priorities

You may be a one-woman show wearing many hats in your business or you may have a staff and team.  You can become ineffective and burned out, in either case, if you never learn to delegate.  Author John Maxwell observed that, “Most people fall into one of two categories when it comes to delegation; they’re either clingers or dumpers.  Clingers refuse to let go of anything they think is important --- whether they are the best person to do it or not.  Their goal is perfection.  Dumpers are quick to get rid of tasks, yet give little thought to how successful their delegation efforts will be.  Their goal is to get things off their desk.”

People who reach the highest level in their profession, focus on their priorities and they know how to empower the people around them to create a productive atmosphere.

Prioritize – know what is important

Organize – decide how it will be done

Plan – decide when you will do it

Communicate – share your priorities with your team

Execute – follow through on your plan

Evaluate – examine yourself and your results in order to improve

Balance – health is your first wealth --- remember to nurture your health, family, peace of mind, spiritual and social life

When you sleep at night, make sure your body and YOUR MIND get some rest.

Networking

Networking is about meeting people, and for me, it was about overcoming shyness. I had to learn how to overcome being introverted and become more extroverted. I have to tell you, in the beginning, it wasn’t easy for me to get out of the house or stop work to get out and promote myself. Self-promotion seemed to be in direct conflict with my upbringing as a female. I mistakenly thought promoting myself was too aggressive and prideful. I began to gain the advantage edge the more I learned to be visible, network, offer my business cards, remember names, serve others in my networking circle, attend social/business gatherings and stand before a group to promote my services, projects and business and watched my business opportunities increase.

People like to do business with people they know. Networking gives you the chance to meet new people, make new contacts, exchange ideas and interact with others. This can be really challenging for small business owners who run their businesses from home. It can also seem challenging for those who don't live in larger cities, but rather in smaller towns.

Networking doesn’t work unless you WORK it. (read more in the book Success Gems by Jewel Diamond Taylor, page 59).

I like what graphic artist Jeanna Pool states, “Networking is not net-sit, net- eat, net-drink or net-hide-in- the-corner-and-don't-talk-to-anyone.  It is netWORK.

Are the first, the best or different?

I trust you are having an excellent day. You and I know that we must get up early, start off with healthy food, water, stretching and hit the ground running as we complete each task on our things-to- do list.

Remember this success rule --- In order to be really successful, you've got to be either the first, the best or different.

Today you're probably focusing on "How can I get more customers? How can I make more money? "How can I continue wearing all these hats?" In the game of business, we need to understand the power of self-promotion and constant communication. Here are some excellent ways to create and stay in touch with customers, clients, mentors and the public.

  • PRINT - Letters; brochures; newsletters; articles, testimonials, cards
  • PHONE - keep the personal touch, don't allow e-mails to make you lazy and impersonal.
  • HOST EVENTS -hosting periodic mixers, seminars, conferences on topics of interest; acting as an intermediary with other clients for mutual learning.
  • COLLABORATION - leaders should also know how to serve, collaborate with your peers, team efforts to support each other's projects can be fun learning experiences and builds relationships.
  • INTERNET - regular e-mail contact; branding in your email signature file; e-mail with ideas and suggestions; references and/or hyperlinks to relevant sites; a chat room on your website
  • OTHER IDEAS - co-authoring articles with the business associates or clients; sending fax messages and information; advertising in industry publications the client reads; exhibiting at trade shows that key clients will attend; asking the client to help you as an advisor, editor, etc.; inviting the client to be on your advisory board; breakfast or lunch meetings you sponsor on relevant topics.
